| Late last year, management at the Mecure Inn Continental Hotel, Broome WA faced a serious problem - the bore which fed the once plush lawns and gardens had become increasingly saline to the extent that just about everything was dying. In desperation the hotel's operators turned to Hydrosmart International, an Adelaide based manufacturer of a computerised chemical free water treatment process adapted from a technology origin-ally developed to solve corrosion problems in the UK. Now that technology is helping protect plants from the adverse effects of salinity.
The technology comprises a computer which digitally generates high specific resonance frequencies. These frequencies are transferred into the water flow via antennae, which are wound around the water pipe. |
According to Hydrosmart's directors, the frequencies inhibit electron bonding and prevent crystals from building. They say that without their bonding ability, large mineral crystals such as sodium chloride become unstable and collapse into tiny particle form. As a result, chlorides are removed from the root zone of affected plants enabling the uptake of calcium, magnesium and potassium which are essential for healthy plant growth. "When we installed our system in Broome salt levels in the bore were 3600 ppm, yet within eight weeks, lawns and plants were flourishing," said Hydrosmart director, Paul Pearce.
Over the past six years, Hydrosmart has been used with success on cooling towers to produce effective de-scaling without the use of

Chemicals, as a chemical free water softener in a leading Adelaide health club and by a major vineyard in McLaren Vale where the system effectively de-scaled 75,000 blocked drippers. Paul believes the biggest potential for the technology lies in helping solve the water problems, including salinity facing farmers. "A number of farmers are using our system to grow healthy plants using water with salinity levels normally considered toxic to plant life. They are telling us that soil salinity levels are falling and their soils have never been healthier." Paul said. "It's true that in some quarters we have been perceived as a 'snake oil' peripheral technology, however with continuing success stories, Hydrosmart is well down the road to becoming adopted as a main stream solution."
